Buttigieg on Big Tech: Lawmakers “Barely Understand The Thing They’re Supposed To Be Regulating”

  1. 1zzie

Maybe not all the ins and outs, but they certainly understand how they can benefit from their end product, they use their profiling and targeting services to run their campaigns. I get he’s making the case for his youth, but let’s not let them off the hook by giving them the ignorance card, and let’s not be completely agist.

lawmakers barely understand anything they are supposed to be regulating. Most of them would be happy if crank telephones, fax and newspapers make a come back.

Honestly we just need to retrain every governor and senator about technology and have it not be linked to some sleezy lobbyist telling them lies. These guys dont have the know-how to tell apart a lie from the truth when it comes to tech and thats half the battle. Then after that we still need to fight the corrupt ones because after the training they will have no excuses.

“barely understand” implies any level of understanding.

the average congressman is so far off the mark that they don’t have any grasp whatsoever on the issues, much less the day- to day concerns.

  5. By barely understand you mean, lack all understanding of technology from the most simple definition to the most complex application and every needed landmark, structure and function in between…

I’m originally from South Bend and got to meet Mayor Peter a few times… He’s a super sharp guy and I’m hoping he gets a spot for the primary debates… If you want to help him donate to his campaign, even if its a tiny bit! He needs unique contributors more than actual funds right now.

Buttigieg is pretty great. Harvard grad, Rhodes scholar at Oxford, Afghanistan war vet, and Mayor of South Bend, Indiana. People need to hear more of what he has to say.

Everybody should think about donating $3 so he gets up to the debate stage.

Ten movies streaming across that, that Internet, and what happens to your own personal Internet? I just the other day got… an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o’clock in the morning on Friday. I got it yesterday. Why?

This is the result of Congress defunding the Office of Technology Assessment two decades ago (it still technically exists, but is run on a shoestring budget and is practically useless). An office that Congress decided was useless and the GOP defunded turned out to be absolutely necessary and now we have congresscritters that have zero idea of how tech works, because the people who would explain it to them aren’t there.

Shortsightedness bit them in the ass, and now people are wondering why we have luddites in office. We’d probably have a lot less if they didn’t cut off their noses to spite their face.

Lol. I love the assumption that they are supposed to be regulating the tech companies in some unique way

If anything they are supposed to be regulating the violations of rights to others. That require little understanding of how the tech companies work

This can be said about any topic congress is regulating. I highly recommend you watch congress doing a dog and pony show on a topic in which you are knowledgable. You’ll walk away convinced they are idiots.

My favorite of all time is an idiot congressperson asking an Admiral if Guam will capsize due to overpopulation.

‘Barely understand’ might be overstating. When you put climate change deniers in the EPA, Telecom lawyers in charge of protecting people against telecoms at the FCC, and nominate fox news reporters to become your Ambassador to the UN, I think having a ‘bare understanding’ of their job might actually be an improvement on where they are at.

I was watching CNBC yesterday and one of the clowns at their round table was talking about ROKU stock.

And his response was “there are so many streaming companies out there right now, like 30, that the field is so crowded, I don’t see how they stand out”.

So the idiot didn’t realize ROKU was also a hardware company and actually in quite a limited field of what; Apple, Amazon and Google devices?

Apparently the idiot recommending stock picks for us didn’t realize ROKU is not like HULU, YouTube TV, SlingTV, PSVUE, etc.
